As from September 24, 2006, the Moslem in all over the world are obligated to fast. NGABUBURIT! Yes, this term means the time we spent approaching the mosque call at dusk to have a fasting break.

We can spend the time by taking a walk at a snacks centre or shopping at mall ! Those who usually spend the time before fasting break are teenagers, while the families usually spend it on Saturday on Sunday.

Surabaya residents or those of other areas also cook a traditional snack called APEM to welcome the fasting month (usually within 7 days prior to the fasting month). The snack then is distributed to their next-door neighbors and this activity is usually called as APEMAN. This tradition is performed annually, and for those who do not have time to cook it, a ready-to-serve APEM is available at traditional market.

During the fasting month in Surabaya, there are usually many accidental vendors along the streets. They sell various kinds of drinks, sweet foods eaten upon breaking the fast and meals at affordable price that are quite tasty! Wow!! To those who are lazy to cook, they do not have to be worried but just choose their favorite menu there. Those sweet foods for example are fried banana, corn fritter (sometimes with shrimps), fried fermented soybean cake, fried cassava, and et cetera.

Have a nice fasting!!
